Swire Shipping has switched three of its vessels serving the South Pacific to B24 second generation biofuel blends. The three vessels are Apia Chief and Tonga Chief on the Pacific Weekly Express service from Southeast Asia to Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, New Caledonia and Fiji; and Kokopo Chief on the East Timor service from Singapore to Dili, Darwin and Surabaya. The biofuel programme brings together Swire Shipping and sister company, Argent Energy, and the collaboration also includes an agreement with biofuel supplier, BP in Singapore, to explore new feedstocks of marine fuel. In its first year, the impact of the programme will be comparable to removing 2,700 cars from the road.

Swire Shipping has also launched “Voyage to Zero”, a carbon insetting programme aimed at helping customers decarbonise their supply chains. Participating customers will receive certificates of savings achieved by the use of second generation biofuels on Swire Shipping vessels, and verified by an independent third party towards reduction of their Scope 3 emissions.
