United States Cold Storage (“USCS”) is exploring a range of new ways to keep its energy-intensive warehouses cool. Among these options is a thermal energy storage system (“TES”) installed in September at USCS Tulare South in California. Created by Viking Cold Solutions, the system consists of intelligent controls and phase change materials that fit into existing warehouse racking – so there is no impact on storage capacity. The TES absorbs and consolidates up to 85% of heat infiltration, enabling warehouse refrigeration systems to be safely cycled off for up to 13 hours each day during peak energy demand times. The technology has the potential to help Tulare South save 500,000 kilowatts of energy and reduce CO2 by 300 metric tons annually; it also provides resilience in the event of unplanned power disruptions and could help USCS meet State incentives for reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
