Since February, Swire Shipping's Westwood Service vessels have been implementing its Safety Guardian Initiative, designed to increase crew involvement in safety and encourage proactive hazard reporting.
Each month, the Master appoints two Safety Guardians to look for unsafe acts and conditions, and submit at least two safety observations. These are shared and discussed during safety meetings.
This rotating role ensures all crew members have the opportunity to participate, improve awareness and reinforce the message that safety is everyone's responsibility. By involving crew members directly, the initiative helps build long-term safety habits and encourages a culture where hazards are identified and reported.
